Fireplace Surround
Howard County, Maryland

In addition to tackling the exterior modifications to the home, the client wanted to revamp some of the more dated interior elements as well. The fireplace, a focal point of the Family Room, was a prime candidate.

The existing wood-burning fireplace featured an outdated brick surround, hearth and mantle. The client's desire was to give it a fresh appearance, while adding some useful built-in features such as a desk, shelves, and cabinetry for storage. Additionally, they wanted to convert the fireplace from wood-burning to gas for ease of use. Here are a few images showing the various stages of this project within a project.

The top image shows the completed fireplace surround. A desk with an overhead cabinet and built-in shelving flank a new mantle with a recessed, arched niche. New ceramic tiles cover the old brickwork. Downlights illuminate the key features and add warmth to the space. At this time, the low-voltage lighting has yet to be installed at the bookcase and in the desk niche, but the project is otherwise complete.

The next image is of the existing fireplace just at the beginning of renovation work. The existing hearth has been cut back and the built-ins are going up. Note the use of pre-manufactured, "off the shelf" components, used to speed up the construction and also as a cost-saving measure.
