Residence
Howard County, Maryland

Situated within a 60's era development of existing houses, this older split-level home was in need of renovation and expansion to better meet the needs of the current owners.

Whereas the clients could have relocated their family to a new, larger home elsewhere, they preferred to remain in their chosen community, close to work, friends, and good schools. The uprooting process can be very difficult, especially on children, and there just wasn't a compelling reason to do this. They wanted to change the house, not the neighborhood.

The programmatic challenge here was to integrate their requirements into an addition that would blend harmoniously with the established vernacular without calling undue attention to itself. Being located at a highly visible bend in the road, the massing and proportion needed to be carefully addressed to maintain an appropriate sense of scale. Having taken pains to avoid an obvious added-on look, the result is one that blurs the lines between existing and new. The dilapidated materials on the facade were replaced and upgraded, the driveway was relocated, and site drainage issues were addressed.
