The owners had a strong desire to enliven a seldom-used rear yard and wanted to replace their high-maintenance, aging wooden deck with a new, raised masonry patio. A lower stone patio expands to encompass an in-ground pool with built-in spa. This design also features an octagonal timber-frame sunroom that adds a dramatic new living space to the floor plan, and bookends the pool area, providing a sense of privacy and enclosure.

The raised patio features quartzite stone paving, with an arcade of brick archways enclosing a lower patio off the existing walk-out basement. The lower patio provides a delightful shady refuge from the summer sun, and also features a glass-block enclosed outdoor shower at one end.
