This traditionally-inspired two-story dwelling in a picturesque, wooded setting now features a couple new wings to provide much-needed additional living space. The main addition anchors the expanded home with a Great Room, stone fireplace, a new formal Dining Room, and a second-floor master suite that overlooks the entry courtyard. A sumptuous gourmet kitchen occupies the link between the Garage and the main two-story addition, and opens to an elegant stone-paved patio at the rear yard.
The top two photos show the nearly-completed addition. The stone on the facade was locally quarried, and contributes to the sutainability and reduced environmental impact of this project. The carriage house-inspired garage wing features home office space in the dormered attic. The garage is set back into the hill to work with the existing grade, to minimize impact to the site.
The center photo is a computer-generated 3D model, produced to give the clients a birdseye view of the proposed project early on in the design process. SketchUp was used to produce the initial 3D model, and lighting effects were added using Artlantis.
The bottom images show the first phase of construction, which was to convert an existing attic storage room into a bedroom. This was accomplished by opening up a portion of the existing roof and framing a new gable to provide the necessary head height for the bedroom. The remaining nooks and crannies left over from the original attic space add excitement and interest to this reclaimed space.
