Private Residence
Anne Arundel County, Maryland

This client purchased a stunning waterfront property near Annapolis, Maryland with an older house existing on the property. The house had been added onto a couple of times over the course of several decades, and was in need of a comprehensive design overhaul both inside and out. There was no garage, and the "wood stilts and glass" contemporary feel of the riverfront facade was not to the owner's liking. The program was to rework the interior plan, adding on new square footage where needed, while reconfiguring the existing spaces. In addition, a new semi-detached garage was proposed. The garage would be constructed with a traditional "carriage house" look, with living space above that would serve as temporary living quarters for the owners while the main house underwent renovation, and then would convert to guest quarters afterwards.

Working in a consulting capacity with the prime architect, I assisted in developing the initial conceptual drawings and then the construction documents. Classically-inspired columns replaced pressure-treated posts, and the areas under the deck were enclosed with lattice and trim to alleviate the house-on-stilts effect. This created a sense of the house being anchored to the site as opposed to teetering on it. Veneer-stone coursing with a cedar-like shingle siding (both manufactured products chosen for their durability, and ease of maintenance) gave the traditionally-minded appearance the client was looking for.
